A huge part of my diabetes reversal plan is my daily breakfast. What I eat each day for my first meal is what I like to call my SuperBowl. It works well for me for two main reasons.
Number one, I used to eat 2 or 3 eggs and some bread/toast with butter, and maybe some cheese for my breakfast. That's the kind of food that gave me type 2 diabetes, obesity, high cholesterol, and high blood pressure. It contained a lot of saturated fat, it was high in sodium, and it was loaded with high-glycemic carbs. If you are eating something like this 5-7 times a week, I would reconsider. Just the fact that I'm not eating this anymore is a big part of my success. Some diseases associated with this type of diet are: type 2 diabetes, heart attack, stroke, and kidney disease. It is also very pro-inflammatory. It silently damages joints, arteries, nerves, and your digestive system.
Number two, everything that I add to the bowl has a purpose for being there. There is a lot to uncover, so I'll let you know what's in it, and then in subsequent posts, I'll break down why I'm including each ingredient.
My SuperBowl starts with a half cup of old fashioned oats. I make them in them in the microwave with 1 cup of water; no salt added. When it's done cooking, I stir in the following: ground flax seeds, wheat germ, Ceylon cinnamon, powdered ginger, black pepper, black cumin, barberries, and walnuts.
I like a little sweetness in my oatmeal, but I don't want to add sweetener to it, so I cut up an apple into slices and use the oatmeal as a dip.
The SuperBowl and the apple comes out to a little over 400 calories. Here are some other nutrition facts about it: 25% fat, 64% carbs, 10% protein, zero cholesterol, and 20 grams of fiber.
Below is a video from NutritionFacts.org that explains the positive effects of oatmeal on diabetics. In the video, Dr. Greger warns of it working too well, and doing this under the supervision of a doctor. I'm using a continuous glucose monitor, and my blood sugar is not dropping too low. I would guess that if you were taking insulin, you would need to watch this carefully. As of now, I have not had to adjust my Metformin dose.
My next posts will cover the other items in my SuperBowl and why they are being included.
